WE HAVE BEEN
BUSY! OVER THE PAST SEVERAL DAYS WE HAVE SCRATCHED A FEW THINGS OFF OF OUR LIST AND MADE A FEW OF OUR MAJOR PURCHASES. WE PUT OUR LAZY JACKS UP, PUT OUR BOOM VANG ON, GOT OUR NEW MAIN SAIL ON (IT FITS!), HAD OUR NEW SETTEE CUSHIONS MADE (PICTURES OF THE CUSHIONS LATER!), BUILT THE QUARTER BERTH, MADE AND INSTALLED OUR FORWARD BERTH OVERHEAD, AND HAVE STARTED THE OVERHEAD IN THE SALOON. OUR WATER MAKER THAT WE ORDERED LAST WEEK CAME IN! IT IS PAID FOR AND READY TO BE INSTALLED. 250 FEET OF ANCHOR CHAIN IS ORDERED AND WILL BE IN THIS WEEKEND FOR US.

THE OVERHEAD HAS BEEN THE MAIN PROJECT- NOT THE HARDEST, BUT DEFINITELY THE MOST TIME CONSUMING. TEMPLATES ARE THE STARTING POINT, AS WE DO NOT HAVE ANY OLD PATTERN TO GO BY (I CAN, BY THE WAY, NOW MAKE TEMPLATES IN MY SLEEP!!). WE DO THIS BY TAKING CRAFT PAPER, MEASURING, CUTTING, TRIMMING, AND FITTING IT TO MAKE A TEMPLATE FOR OUR OVERHEAD SECTIONS. ONCE TEMPLATES ARE MADE WE TRACE THE TEMPLATES ONTO OUR OVERHEAD AND CUT THE OVERHEAD SECTIONS. FINALLY THE OVERHEAD IS MOUNTED SECTION BY SECTION. WE ARE ABOUT HALFWAY FINISHED WITH THE OVERHEAD AT THIS POINT (MINUS THE TRIM WORK). WOOD FRAMEWORK HAD TO BE BUILT (UNDERSIDE OF THE DECK) IN ORDER TO HAVE SOMETHING TO MOUNT THE OVERHEAD TO WHERE THE COACH TOP BEGINS.

A COUPLE OF DAYS AGO WE HAD SOME EXCITEMENT- DOGGIE FELL OVERBOARD! HE TRIED TO JUMP TO THE DOCK FROM THE BOAT, BUT DIDN'T MAKE IT (HE WAS TRYING TO FOLLOW DADDY). UNFORTUNATELY NO ONE SAW HIM UNTIL HE WAS PAST THE NEXT DOCK OVER TRYING TO CLIMB UP THE SEAWALL. CAPTAIN SPOTTED HIM AND PULLED HIM OUT OF THE WATER BY HIS NECK, AND LUCKILY BOTH ENDED UP ONLY WITH A FEW SCRAPES AND BRUISES (WE PUT UP OUR LIFELINE NETTING THAT AFTERNOON).

Good stuff!
ReplyDeleteMind if I ask what sort of paneling you used for the overhead? And what sort of insulation you have under it? It appears to be the pink foam insulation you can get at Home Depot in a 4 x 8 sheet, is that correct?
I need to do my paneling soon and have to figure all this out.
Thanks!
Erick

That's correct Erick; It's the 3/4" pink insulation from HD or the blue from Lowes. On our overhead we wanted smooth easy clean up so we went with paneling similar to dry erase board texture. We found 1/8" thick sheets at HD for about $13 a panel. It's a breeze to work with.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Looks like you all are making good progress. Glad to hear the new sail fit well. Have you been out to exercise the new cloth? I found the crisp snap of new sailcloth amazingly satisfying. Our new headsail made a big difference in performance. Now we are lusting after a new main.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting the updates. I really enjoy following your progress. Hopefully once I get my urgent work projects completed I can return to some C'est la Vie projects. Until that time I'll continue to live vicariously through your updates.
We haven't had time to take her out yet between the short day light and the big project list, but maybe a New Year's Day adventure!
ReplyDeleteGlad you are enjoying the blog! We are getting ready to start our "pretty" interior work and to resurrecting the Perkins diesel very soon.
